Following the retreat of Trump-ordered federal agents late last week, protests in downtown Portland, Oregon, remained largely peaceful over the weekend—a stark contrast to the past month’s tear gas and firework-filled nightly clashes.
KEY FACTS
Federal agents began pulling back from Portland on Thursday, after Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced she had come to an agreement with the Trump administration.
Though President Trump insisted forces would remain in the city to combat “anarchists” and “agitators,” local reports noted the absence of military-clad agents at Thursday night’s protest.
Trump originally directed the Department of Homeland Security to send forces to Portland earlier this month to quell Black Lives Matter protests, which have continued in the city since the death of George Floyd, often attacking the federal courthouse.
While Trump insisted the federal agents were necessary to calm a city “out of control,” local officials argued that feds were stoking tensions with aggressive tactics.
Since local and state police appeared to take over late last week, violence steeply de-escalated.
Aside from two arrests, the Portland Police Department reported largely peaceful protests and marches over the weekend.
