Picture 1 1

In June 2020, a record 46 million Americans planned on taking an RV trip within the next 12 months. With an itching to explore the outdoors after over a year of staying indoors, Americans are going camping.

For nature lovers who like a little more comfort than a tent, RV camping is the way to go. But just because you get to avoid the chaos of pitching a tent doesn’t mean camping in an RV is a total breeze! There are a few things you’ll need to learn to have a successful RV camping trip.

Luckily, we have the guide for you. Keep reading for our top 3 tips for going camping in an RV.

  1. Know What You Can Tow Before You Go

Before you get your hands on your dream RV, you have to consider the different types of RVs to choose from. Are you looking for a motorhome with amenities? Or a camper or travel trailer for your vehicle to tow?

If you’re going with the latter, make sure your vehicle is equipped to tow the camper or trailer of your choice before renting or buying. For example, fifth-wheel campers work well for pickup trucks. Other options include pop-up campers, travel campers, or teardrop campers.

Even a larger standard vehicle such as an SUV has limitations in how much it can carry. Pop-up campers are the best choice for SUVs and smaller vehicles if you don’t wish to invest in a new, larger vehicle. And don’t leave out your gear and supplies when calculating your car’s towing capacity!

  1. Campsite Selection Is Key

For RV campgrounds and parks, expect to pay more than the usual fee for tent camping. If you’re planning a long-term trip, investing in an RV camp membership will be worthwhile. You can also search for free campsites or park on public BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land at no cost.

If your RV needs amenities like electric/water hookups, WiFi, or dumping stations, make sure to plan ahead and book your campsites in advance. You don’t want to pay an arm and a leg last minute at a site only to find out they don’t have what you need.

  1. RV Health and Safety

Having a home on the road comes with its own unique rules to follow to keep you and other campers safe. Learn the rules for each campsite you visit and no matter where you go, leave no trash behind.

For sanitary reasons, you’ll need to get familiar with the septic tanks when camping in an RV. The black tank is for bathroom waste while the grey tank is for shower or sink water. Get to know each campsite’s dumping station etiquette as well.

When on the road, make sure to drive slower than usual and with caution due to your vehicle size. Always secure all wheels and brakes when parked. And make sure to store away any loose items while driving.

Once your trip is complete, look into trading in your RV to spread the joy of camping in an RV to others! And you’ll make some dough along the way.
